Ersatzfriend is a backup system for safeguarding groups. The following explanation is a quote from UK Moderators Group, message no. 50353, 2nd July 2009, from Deron Beale:

"The ErsatzFriend account is handled by a volunteer who has done so for several years. The actual ersatzfriend@ freecycle.org email address is a backup co-owner of numerous groups and, as you can imagine, receives several thousand emails a day which are deleted out weekly. As such, do not attempt to contact this email address as any emails received will be lost in this volume of mail. Instead, if you wish to have EF added as a backup in a local group, one need instead contact the email address: AddEF@freecycle.org

Side note: The volunteer running EF wishes to remain anonymous, but, no it is not Deron nor is it anyone who is a leader in any other capacity.

What are EF’s roles:

* The primary role is to serve as a backup owner address for local groups where desired. It can on occasion occur that a local group owner forgets their password, or for a number of different reasons can no longer access the local group. If this happens, AddEF@Freecycle.org may then be contacted to repromote the local group owner address or to adjust the privileges accordingly.

*Background: Because we were losing a large number of groups because the local group owner would lose access, mods originally voted to have EF be mandatory co-owner of all groups. Then a year or two later, they then voted that this be optional in a poll.

* As a backup co-owner, EF is not used for active moderation beyond re-adding local mod privileges or access when they are locked out or access is lost by the local group owner.

* For the Interim Moderation Team, EF is the sole group owner. In the vast majority of cases, IMod groups are replacing local groups that have been “taken rogue” by the local group owner and are no longer part of The Freecycle Network. Occasionally, when a local group owner steps down, and the owner does not feel the remaining local mods should be made the new owner, generally because of a lack of experience, the owner instead promotes EF so that they can move on. EF is then used to promote an IMod team volunteer to moderator and the process of moving the group on site is initiated. For Imod groups, EF promotes the Imod volunteer to moderator who then does any further moderation and establishing if there are remaining mods and works to recruit new local mods as well.

* For obvious security reasons, there are only two people on the planet who have access to EF accounts, the volunteer who runs them and Deron for emergency backup access."
